hygge in the design of mental health care facilities
What is hygge? (HOO-guh)
A Danish term that describes the quality of coziness and comfort that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.
Thesis argument
The in-patient care system often leaves much to be explored in the realm of architecture. The design of the physical environment can often be contradictory in the ways that it can facilitate the wellness and healing of the mentally ill. With so many restrictions in place to ensure safety of its occupants, how can we work around the rigidity of design for in-patient facilities to create a more comfortable experience and environment?
By introducing aspects of hygge through materiality, connection to nature and facilitation of community, wellness facilities can revitalize the quality of the environment without risking the safety of its patients.
