EMPWR Pod Industrial Park

This Journeyman International thesis is aimed at developing a replicable model for an eco-industrial park in which small scale businesses from the Rukungiri district of Uganda will be encouraged to collaborate through the physical exchange of materials, energy, water, and byproducts.

The honey bee hive functions as a microcosm of this new architectural typology; and for this reason, I am drawing inspiration for the concept and design of the eco-industrial park from the symbiotic relationship between industry and bees (and, consequently, water and disease).

The eco-industrial park is to be made up of a series of workshop spaces that incorporate recycled shipping containers. These spaces—dubbed “EMPWR Pods” by the nonprofit organization I am partnering with—will provide a space for both social and economic development as well as the productive use of local materials, methods, and resources.
