Citizen Quorum

Inspired by an abstraction of bacterial communication and group order, this thesis addresses the malleable nature of students in an educational environment and explores how architecture can facilitate in educating a young, holistic citizen. Noting that any environment is behavior setting, the components of a campus become indicators for asserting the social identity of oneself and others. By heightening visibility and nonverbal expression between community members and their interests, students can break down predispositions and discover the opportunities of departments that may be discounted if unseen.

The school acts as a promenade for students and faculty alike, guiding members in a cyclical viewing of classrooms, studios, theatres and laboratories. Consider the learning techniques of Plato’s Academy, Aristotle’s Peripatetic school, and Kurt Hahn’s Outward Bound. The pedagogy of the Athenian School in Danville, California models itself on the three core ideals of society, self, and nature. The campus integrates these to foster interdisciplinary discussion in an environment for a young citizen of the world.
